San Diego. Renowned Japanese player Shohei Ohtani continues to progress in his recovery process as a pitcher, after undergoing surgery on his right elbow in 2023 and a procedure on his left shoulder in late 2024. This Tuesday, Ohtani held a live batting practice session, pitching for three innings and throwing 44 pitches, marking his longest session so far in his rehabilitation. Ohtani faced Dodgers minor league players at Petco Park in San Diego, allowing only one hit and one walk, both in the third inning. He completed the first two innings with 11 and 10 pitches, respectively, while the last one required 23 pitches. The session, which was originally planned for Monday, was postponed as a precaution after Ohtani was hit by a pitch on his left foot last Sunday in the game against the Cardinals. Despite this, his offensive participation was not affected, as he started on Monday and hit a double, finishing the game with a 5-1 against the Padres.

Significant progress, but no return date defined

This was the third time this year that Ohtani faced live batters, fueling expectations about his possible return as a pitcher. Although there is still no official date for his reappearance in a Major League game, sources close to the team suggest that his return could be after the All-Star break. Ohtani’s recovery is closely followed by fans, analysts, and executives, due to his ability to influence both from the mound and with the bat, making him a unique figure in contemporary baseball history.
