Brussels, Belgium – Dominican athletics celebrates a new triumph thanks to the outstanding performance of Alexander Ogando, who was crowned champion in the 200-meter dash of the Memorial Van Damme, an event belonging to the World Athletics Diamond League, held at the King Baudouin Stadium.
Ogando secures his place in the Diamond League final
The Dominican athlete stopped the clock at 20.16 seconds, surpassing American Robert Gregory (20.19) and Nigerian Udodi Onwukurike (20.29) in a close competition. Although he did not achieve his best mark of the season, this victory guarantees him a place in the Diamond League final, which will take place on August 28 in Zurich, Switzerland.
Ogando, a member of the 4×400 mixed relay team that won the world gold in Oregon 2022 and Olympic silver in Tokyo 2020, once again demonstrated his ability to compete at the highest level in individual athletics. With this triumph, he accumulated 19 points in the overall standings, placing fourth, behind Joseph Fahnbulleh (Liberia, 29), Letsile Tebogo (Botswana, 23) and Courtney Lindsey (United States, 22).
Dominican Republic in the final
The Dominican representation will be reinforced in Zurich, as Marileidy Paulino, world and Olympic champion, also secured her qualification in the 400-meter dash, where she will seek to revalidate the title obtained in 2023.
