Marlins and Cubs agree to trade: Edward Cabrera to Chicago
The Miami Marlins have reached a trade agreement with the Chicago Cubs, a move that will send right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera to the Chicago organization. In return, the Marlins will receive a prospect package led by outfielder Owen Caissie, sources reported.
The agreement, still pending official confirmation by both teams, includes Caissie, considered the Cubs’ top prospect and number 47 in baseball according to MLB Pipeline. In addition, the Marlins will receive Dominican infielders Cristian Hernández, Chicago’s number 11 prospect, and Edgardo de León.
Cabrera, in his first year of salary arbitration eligibility, will remain under contractual control of the team that acquires him until the end of the 2028 season.
The Dominican pitcher, who will turn 28 in 2026, signed with the Marlins as part of the 2015 international class. Throughout his first campaigns in the Major Leagues, he demonstrated notable potential, but his development as a starter was affected by control problems and injuries.
Between 2021 and 2024, Cabrera accumulated 4.3 bWAR, with EFE+ of 102, WHIP of 1.347, 5.1 walks and 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings, in 63 appearances, 61 as a starter. In 2023, he was sent to Triple-A and did not participate in the National League Wild Card Series due to difficulties with control.
His performance showed improvement in 2025, recording his best numbers: 26 starts, 137.2 innings pitched, 150 strikeouts, 3.1 walks per nine innings, and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.13. He finished the season with an ERA+ of 125 and completed at least seven innings in four starts.
Between May 4 and August 8, Cabrera maintained an ERA of 2.22, the third-best in the National League and the fourth-best in all of Major League Baseball during that period.
However, the season also included health issues. He left an opening on July 11 due to discomfort in his right elbow and exited early from his August 30 presentation due to a sprain in the same elbow, before returning for two final openings, including the team’s last, where he pitched five scoreless innings.
