MESA, ARIZONA – Dominican pitcher Luis Gil will start the 2026 season in Triple-A, anticipating his eventual incorporation into the New York Yankees’ rotation.
Development Plan for Gil
According to Aaron Boone, the team’s manager, the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year will start the season in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. This strategy aims to optimize Gil’s development, preparing him to take on the role of fifth starter when required.
Gil, 27 years old, recorded a 2-1 record with an ERA of 4.66 during spring training, after pitching 57 innings in the previous season. The Yankees’ coaching staff is confident in his good physical condition and his ability to contribute to the team during the season, once he is called up to the Major Leagues.
The decision is not based on poor performance in the preseason, but on the current configuration of the pitching staff and internal competition for rotation spots.
