Kevin Keegan reveals stage 4 cancer diagnosis

The legendary former footballer and coach Kevin Keegan, winner of the Ballon d’Or in 1978 and 1979, has revealed that he is suffering from stage 4 cancer. The news comes after his family reported his illness in February.

I had a car accident and, through that, I had to undergo surgery. While they were performing it, they discovered that I had cancer. I have contacted a top-level doctor to fight what I have, which is stage four cancer. He told me that with this new treatment I had a great success rate. I asked him how much it was and he said 33%… I thought it would be 80-90.

Keegan, 75, had a distinguished career as a player, especially at Liverpool, where he played more than 300 matches. With Liverpool, he won the Premier League three times and the European Cup in 1977. Subsequently, he played for Hamburg, where he won two consecutive Ballon d’Ors, the Bundesliga, and the runner-up position in the European Cup. With the English selection, Keegan played 63 matches and scored 21 goals, participating in the 1982 World Cup. Keegan was also England’s coach, but his time was not successful, being eliminated in the group stage of Euro 2000. Newcastle United, the club where he had a great influence, has expressed its support for Keegan and his family. During his time at Newcastle, Keegan achieved promotion to the First Division and came close to winning the national title, finishing second in the 1997 season.
