John Wall Hangs Up His Boots: A Farewell to the NBA
Point guard John Wall, selected first overall in the 2010 draft and recognized as one of the most dynamic point guards of his generation, has announced his official retirement from the NBA after 11 seasons. At 34 years old, Wall says goodbye with averages of 18.7 points and 8.9 assists per game, statistics that place him among the best point guards of the last decade. He spent a large part of his career with the Washington Wizards, although he also played for the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers. In his best season, 2016-2017, he averaged 23.1 points and 10.7 assists, which earned him a place on the All-NBA third team. Noted for his speed, athleticism, and court vision, Wall was also the slam dunk contest champion in 2014 and a member of the NBA’s second defensive team in 2015. However, injuries significantly affected his career. In the last six seasons, he failed to play in more than half of the matches and in the last two years he did not see action in the league. Selected five times for the All-Star Game, Wall became a beloved figure in Washington, where he led the Wizards to four consecutive playoff appearances between 2014 and 2017. Although the second part of his career was marked by physical problems, his impact on the league and on the fans keeps him as one of the most remembered point guards of his time. With his retirement, Wall closes a chapter full of individual and collective successes, leaving open the expectation about his future in basketball, whether in management, coaching or the media.Today I retire from the court, but not from basketball. Basketball will always be present in my life and new opportunities arise. I feel that now is the time to confidently face my next chapter.
