SAN FRANCISCO – An era could be coming to an end in the 2026 Major League Baseball season. Heliot Ramos, Puerto Rican outfielder, could repeat as a starter in left field for the San Francisco Giants, a milestone not seen since the Barry Bonds era.
This situation would break a curious historical streak. The Giants have presented 19 different left fielders as starters on Opening Day consecutively. This mark equals that of the Carmelites/Orioles (1937-1955) as the longest in the Majors since 1900 without repeating a player in the same position.
Manager Tony Vitello confirmed that Ramos will be the starter in left field for the Opening Night game against the New York Yankees. This would mean stability in that position, something not seen since 2007, when Barry Bonds defended that area.
After Bonds’ departure, several players have occupied left field on Opening Day, including Hunter Pence, Ángel Pagán, Joc Pederson, and Michael Conforto, until Ramos took over the position in 2025.
The possible repetition of Ramos as a starter marks a significant change for the franchise, which begins a new stage under the direction of Vitello, who will debut as a manager in the Major Leagues this season.
The Opening Night game between the Giants and the Yankees will be played at Oracle Park in San Francisco. In addition, this game will be the first live broadcast of a Major League Baseball game via Netflix.
The mound duel will be between Max Fried (Yankees) and Logan Webb (Giants), who will be making his fifth consecutive start on Opening Day.
The game will also be historic due to the implementation of the automated ball-strike review (ABS) system in the regular season.
The 2026 Major League season will begin with this Opening Night, while the full Opening Day will be celebrated the following day.
