Blue Jays blank Padres with solid performance
Toronto, Canada – The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the San Diego Padres 3-0 in the first game of the series played at Rogers Centre. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Anthony Santander stood out with home runs, while Chris Bassitt led a solid performance from the mound.
Guerrero Jr. opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning, his sixth of the season, sending the ball hard to left field. Santander increased the lead in the fifth inning with a two-run hit, also his sixth home run of the year.
Right-hander Chris Bassitt (4-2) pitched six scoreless innings, allowing only four hits, one walk, and striking out six batters. The bullpen was handled by Brendon Little, Yariel Rodríguez, and Jeff Hoffman, who secured his tenth save of the season in twelve opportunities.
This victory represents the first shutout of the year for the Blue Jays. On the other hand, the Padres suffered their third shutout of the season and extended their losing streak to four games.
San Diego’s opener, Dylan Cease (1-3), had an outstanding performance of seven innings, allowing only three hits, which included the two home runs and a single. Despite his good performance, Cease has not achieved a victory since April 2.
