Great Britain Makes History in Mixed Snowboard Cross and Wins Olympic Gold

Great Britain celebrates a historic milestone at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics by securing its first Olympic gold medal in a snow sport. The triumph came in the thrilling mixed team snowboard cross event, marking an unforgettable moment for the country. The British pair of Huw Nightingale and Charlotte Bankes dominated the competition from the initial stages. Their performance was impeccable, setting the best times in the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finally, in the grand final, securing the coveted gold medal. This victory represents the second gold medal for Great Britain in these games, adding to Matt Weston’s triumph in skeleton. This achievement is even more significant because it is the first Olympic gold in a snow discipline for the country, which had previously accumulated fourteen gold medals in ice sports since 1908. Italy and France completed the podium. The Italian representatives, Lorenzo Sommariva and Michela Moioli, took the silver medal. For Moioli, this is her second medal in the mixed modality, after obtaining the runner-up in 2022 and the bronze in the women’s individual event in this edition. The French team, formed by Loan Bozzolo and Léa Casta, won the bronze medal, while Australia finished in fourth position. The mixed team snowboard cross event has had its second appearance in the Olympic program, debuting in Beijing 2022, where the United States won gold, a selection that did not manage to advance to the final on this occasion. With this outstanding performance, Great Britain etches its name in golden letters in the history of winter sports and consolidates the growing development of snowboarding in its competitive structure.
