Félix Reyes Shines in His Phillies Debut

Philadelphia – Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson was looking for an offensive boost for his team, and he found it in the debut of Dominican Félix Reyes. In his first at-bat in the Major Leagues, Reyes hit a home run to right field in the second inning against Atlanta Braves pitcher Chris Sale. This hit put the Phillies ahead 1-0 at Citizens Bank Park.

This home run makes Reyes the seventh player in Phillies history to achieve this feat in his first at-bat in the Majors. An achievement not seen since 2023.

The outfielder was promoted on Friday from Triple-A (Lehigh Valley), replacing Otto Kemp, who failed to establish himself after a difficult start. To make room on the roster, the team designated Cuban Pedro León for assignment. The decision was made amid a slump in the team’s offense, especially against left-handed pitchers, where their collective numbers were low. Thomson acknowledged Kemp’s difficult situation, who did not have consistent turns, but explained that the team needed quick changes. Reyes, 24 years old, had been standing out in the minor leagues with a .333 average and a .999 OPS in 18 games, in addition to a solid performance in spring training. His performance earned him the opportunity to join the big team, where he will share time in left field with Brandon Marsh. The culminating moment arrived when, after letting two of Sale’s pitches go by, Reyes took advantage of a fastball and sent it out of the park. He celebrated enthusiastically as he ran the bases, even losing his helmet, in a scene that marked a dream start to his career in the Major Leagues. With this debut, the young Dominican not only met expectations, but also offered a sign of hope for a Phillies team looking to regain their best offensive form.
