Australian Oscar Piastri, representing McLaren, solidified his position as the leader of the Formula One World Championship by securing victory at the Spanish Grand Prix, held this Sunday at the Montmeló circuit, Barcelona. This was the ninth race of the season.

Piastri secured his fifth victory of the year, surpassing his teammate, the British Lando Norris, and the Monegasque Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, who finished in third place.

Spanish driver Fernando Alonso, two-time world champion, scored his first points of the season by crossing the finish line in ninth position.

Briton George Russell, of Mercedes, positioned himself in fourth place, followed by German Nico Hülkenberg, who achieved the best result of the season for Kick Sauber.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, also of Ferrari, finished in sixth place, followed by the French drivers Isack Hadjar (RB) and Pierre Gasly (Alpine).

Alonso, who is an ambassador for the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, was rewarded for his outstanding performance, achieving ninth place, just ahead of the Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull), four-time world champion. Verstappen suffered a ten-second penalty at the end of the race, which caused him to lose five positions and finish in tenth place.

Currently, Piastri leads the championship with 186 points, surpassing Norris by ten and Verstappen by 49.

The next race, the Canadian Grand Prix, will take place on June 15th at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal.
