Cincinnati has reached an agreement with the outstanding Venezuelan third baseman Eugenio Suárez, one of the most sought-after hitters in the free agent market. The contract is for one season and amounts to 15 million dollars, with a mutual option for 2027 valued at 16 million dollars, according to sources close to the agreement. This agreement is pending the required medical examinations, but is expected to be finalized soon.
Suárez, recognized for his power at the plate, had an outstanding season in 2025. He demonstrated his ability to hit home runs by recording 49 home runs, matching his personal best. In addition, he maintained an offensive line of .228/.298/.526, with an OPS of .824, consolidating himself as an impact hitter in the Major Leagues.
Of the 49 home runs, 36 were connected in 106 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks, before being transferred to the Seattle Mariners. This move allowed Arizona to acquire three of Seattle’s most promising prospects.
Upon his arrival at the Mariners, Suárez’s production decreased in the regular season, with an OPS of .682 in 53 games. However, his performance improved in the postseason. Although he started with few hits, he reacted by adding eight hits in his last seven games, including two home runs in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series, one of them a grand slam that gave Seattle the lead.
For the 2026 season, Suárez, at 34 years old, will accumulate 325 career home runs, averaging more than 27 home runs per season in his 12 years in the Major Leagues. He has surpassed 30 home runs in six of the last seven full seasons (excluding 2020), with 22 in 2023.
Despite his high strikeout rate (29.8% in 2025), Suárez remains an impact hitter, capable of strengthening any lineup. Defensively, he has shown solidity in recent seasons, although in 2025 he had negative numbers at third base.
Suárez returns to Cincinnati, where he played seven seasons and averaged 27 home runs per campaign, before going through Seattle and Arizona.
