INGLEWOOD, California – Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe shined in the Rising Stars Challenge, leading Team Vince to a one-point victory over Team Melo in the start of NBA All-Star Weekend. Edgecombe secured the victory in the final held at the Intuit Dome by converting two crucial free throws. These shots allowed his team to reach the target score of 25, surpassing the team led by Carmelo Anthony. His outstanding performance earned him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award of the event.

Decisive since the semifinals

The guard was not only key in the final. In the semifinals, he scored the last 10 points for his team, eliminating the team selected by Tracy McGrady. In that match, Edgecombe scored 17 of the Team Vince’s total 41 points.

I wanted to win. I hate losing.

Edgecombe demonstrated his commitment to competitiveness in a format that is often taken lightly. The team led by Vince Carter also had contributions from Matas Buzelis and Derik Queen, but it was Edgecombe who made the difference in key moments.

Inspiration from a Legend

The rookie’s intensity was influenced by a previous encounter with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, a Hall of Famer, who shared experiences and reflections with the participants. Edgecombe described the talk as “a dream” and stated that listening to a legend of that level motivated him to compete with greater focus. In his debut season, the 19-year-old player has averaged 14.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.1 assists, standing out even on a team with figures like Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid.

A historic career

Paul ranks second in NBA history in assists (12,552) and steals (2,728), and was the first player to reach at least 20,000 points and 10,000 assists. During his career, he played for the New Orleans Hornets, Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets, Oklahoma City Thunder, Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, and San Antonio Spurs. Commissioner Adam Silver praised his legacy, highlighting his impact on the court and his leadership off it, especially during his time as president of the Players Association. With his retirement, the NBA loses one of the most influential point guards of his generation, whose individual inclusion in the Hall of Fame seems imminent.
