Checo Pérez: Being Verstappen’s teammate, the biggest challenge in F1

2 Min Read

Mexico City – Sergio “Checo” Pérez, the prominent Mexican driver, has revealed that sharing a team with the Dutchman Max Verstappen at Red Bull was the most arduous challenge of his Formula One career. In an interview with the Cracks Podcast, hosted by Oswaldo Trava, Pérez shared details about his experience in the team.

A Constant Challenge at Red Bull

Pérez explained that, despite being in one of the most competitive teams, the project was clearly focused on Verstappen. This dynamic generated constant pressure for the Mexican driver.

The team was built around Max. From the beginning I was aware of it. If I was faster, it became a problem and the atmosphere became very tense.

Pérez detailed that he faced complex situations, even when he matched or surpassed his teammate’s pace. At certain moments, the single-seater became difficult to control, especially when competing directly with Verstappen for important results. Despite these challenges, Pérez achieved notable results during his four seasons with Red Bull. Highlights include a world championship runner-up, a third place in the overall standings, two fourth places, and an eighth place in his last campaign, in 2024.

New challenge with Cadillac

Looking ahead, Pérez is preparing for a new stage by joining the Cadillac team, which will debut in Formula One starting in the 2026 season. The experienced driver assured that he will use everything he learned at Red Bull to face this new challenge.

I have learned to value my work and to make the most of each situation, even in difficult contexts. That experience will be key in what’s to come.
