Reactions and Criticisms Regarding Price Increases
The excessive increase in prices has generated discontent among fans and has provoked political reactions.Ontario Premier Doug Ford called the situation a “rip-off” and announced that his government will investigate Ticketmaster’s monopoly on ticket sales for sporting events and shows. Ticketmaster, a subsidiary of LiveNation, also faces a lawsuit in the United States from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which accuses it of deceptive practices and manipulation of the resale market. In Canada, the company was the subject of a class action lawsuit in 2018 for concealing commissions, a case that concluded this year with a settlement of 6 million Canadian dollars in favor of consumers.“When you have a single actor controlling the market, that’s not fair to the people,” Ford stated. “We are reviewing this situation.”
