Athletics Secure Johenssy Colomé with a Million-Dollar Bonus
The Athletics have officially announced the signing of talented Dominican shortstop Johenssy Colomé, who has received a signing bonus of $4 million. This agreement represents the highest bonus awarded to a player from the Dominican Republic in the international signing market for the year 2026.
This agreement positions Colomé among the five largest bonds of the entire international class, which confirms the high expectations placed on the young man of only 16 years old, considered one of the most complete talents of his generation.
Johenssy Colomé, son of former Major League pitcher Jesús Colomé, has impressed with his combination of offensive power and defensive skills at shortstop. MLB evaluators have compared his bat speed and strength to those of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., while his elegance and defensive range are reminiscent of third baseman Manny Machado.
A Competitive Negotiation
Initially, Colomé had a pre-agreement with the Athletics for approximately $2.3 million. However, his rapid physical and technical development attracted the interest of several Major League teams, who tried to surpass the initial offer.
Faced with this situation, Oakland’s management decided to significantly increase their offer to secure the signing of the Dominican shortstop, whom they consider a fundamental piece for the future of the franchise, especially in its transition to Las Vegas.
Continuity in Investment in Dominican Talent
The signing of Colomé follows the Athletics’ tradition of investing heavily in Dominican talent. In 2019, the organization awarded 5.1 million dollars to Robert Puason, and in the past they developed outstanding figures such as Miguel Tejada, recognized as MVP of the American League.
With this new investment, the Athletics strengthen their presence in the academies of the Dominican Republic and reaffirm their commitment to develop the cornerstones of their franchise from an early age.
