Angels Bolster Roster with García and Chafin for the Postseason

Los Angeles, CA – The Los Angeles Angels have reinforced their bullpen with the acquisition of Luis García and Andrew Chafin, coming from the Washington Nationals. The news was reported by Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, although official confirmation from the teams is still pending. The agreement involves prospects Jake Eder (left-handed pitcher) and Sam Brown (Double-A first baseman), who will join the Washington organization. With the arrival of the new arms, the Angels will have to make adjustments to their roster to strengthen a bullpen affected by injuries.

Luis García: A Familiar Return

For Luis García, 38 years old, this will be his third stint with the Los Angeles team, after having played with them in 2019 and again in 2024, before being traded to the Red Sox. In the 2025 season, García has had a year of contrasts. He began with an ERA of 5.27 in 27.1 innings pitched with the Dodgers, but managed to improve his performance in Washington, where he recorded an impressive mark of 0.90 in 10 innings. In total, García has a combined ERA of 4.10 with 31 strikeouts in 37.1 innings this season. Throughout his Major League career, he maintains an overall ERA of 4.14, including 4.09 in 105.2 innings pitched previously with the Angels. His experience in pressure situations makes him a key piece for the bullpen.

A Bullpen Decimated by Injuries

The acquisition of Garcia and Chafin seeks to cover the absences caused by the injuries of key pitchers.
  • Hunter Strickland: Out of action until at least September due to a right shoulder strain.
  • Ben Joyce: Out for the rest of the year after shoulder surgery.
  • Robert Stephenson: Recovering from a nerve issue in his shoulder, close to pitching from the mound.
With the reinforcements, the Angels seek to gain depth and experience in their fight for a spot in the American League Wild Card.
