Carlos “Caballo Bronco” Adames Will Defend His World Title at Madison Square Garden
Dominican boxer Carlos “Caballo Bronco” Adames is preparing for one of the most important fights of his career. The World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight (160 pounds) champion will put his title on the line on January 31st at the emblematic Madison Square Garden in New York, facing American Austin “Ammo” Williams. Adames, considered the most outstanding figure in Dominican professional boxing today, will make his debut as a world champion in the ring at Madison Square Garden. This scenario represents a dream come true for the pugilist from Elías Piña, who will have the support of the numerous Dominican community residing in New York. The Dominican champion, the only active world monarch from the Dominican Republic, will make his fourth title defense and the third as the WBC regular champion. Adames won the belt on October 8, 2022, by knocking out Mexican Juan Macías Montiel in the third round, obtaining the interim title at that time. Subsequently, he successfully defended his interim title on June 23, 2023, defeating former American world champion Julian Williams by knockout in five rounds. On May 8, 2024, the World Boxing Council promoted him to regular champion, after stripping the title from American Jermall Charlo.“Fighting at Madison Square Garden is every boxer’s dream. I’ve been there before, but doing it as a world champion is a special motivation, because I know that many Dominicans will be supporting me,” said Adames after concluding a training session in Las Vegas, Nevada.

His first defense as a regular champion was on June 24, 2024, defeating American Terrell Gausha by unanimous decision. That night was historic for Dominican boxing, as Alberto Puello was proclaimed world champion by defeating Gary Antuanne Russell by split decision.
The second defense of the regular title took place in Saudi Arabia, against the British Hamzah Sheeraz, in a fight that ended in a draw, although much of the public and specialized critics considered Adames the clear winner. Historically, only Leo Cruz has achieved four defenses of the same world title for the Dominican Republic, with a record of three wins and one loss. Joan Guzmán achieved four successful defenses, but in two different divisions: super bantamweight (122 pounds) and junior lightweight (130 pounds). Adames has a professional record of 24 wins, 18 by knockout, one draw, and one loss. His only loss was against Brazilian Patrick Teixeira, in a fight for the 154-pound world title in 2019. His opponent, Austin “Ammo” Williams, has a record of 19 wins, 13 knockouts and one loss, suffered against the British Hamzah Sheeraz. The fight between Adames and Williams will be part of the “The Ring 6” card, which will feature the highly anticipated duel between Teófimo López and Shakur Stevenson as the main event, promising a historic night for world boxing.
