Abreu Shines and Mauricio Debuts with a Homerun in Licey’s Victory

In a stellar night at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium, the Tigres del Licey prevailed 5-3 over the Leones del Escogido. The match was marked by the dominance from the mound of Albert Abreu and the expected debut of Ronny Mauricio, who hit a home run. Abreu (1-0) shone on the mound, earning his first victory in the Dominican Baseball League (LIDOM) since December 14, 2021. The pitcher limited the scarlet offense to one run in six innings, striking out seven batters and giving up one walk. His performance silenced the Lions’ bats, marking a dominant return. With this triumph, the Tigres improve their record to 15-19, solidifying their position in the fight for the fourth qualifying spot, with a game and a half advantage over the Escogido (14-21). The Leones suffered their third consecutive defeat. The Lions’ opener, Norge Ruiz (0-1), had a difficult night, allowing five runs and seven hits, including Mauricio’s home run. Anderson Severino worked 1.2 innings, including an impeccable ninth inning, to secure the save.

Mauricio Responds in His Debut

Licey took the lead early in the game. In the second inning, an error on a hit by Mel Rojas Jr., followed by a single by Cal Stevenson and a run-scoring hit by Armando Alvarez, put the Tigers ahead 1-0. In the third episode, the blue offense exploded with four runs: a single by Cristhian Adames, a two-run home run by Ronny Mauricio in his debut, a run-scoring hit by Rojas Jr., and a double by Stevenson.

Scarlet Reaction Attempt

The Leones tried to react in the sixth inning with a solo home run by Sócrates Brito, who finished the night with a home run and a single. In the eighth, they added two more runs thanks to a double by Erik González and a sacrifice fly by Eguy Rosario, closing the score to 5-3, but it was not enough to catch the Tigres.
