Xavi Hernández takes the reins of the Netherlands national team
The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has officially announced this Wednesday the appointment of Xavi Hernández as the new head coach of the senior men’s national team. The 46-year-old Spanish strategist takes over from Ronald Koeman and has committed to the national team until the conclusion of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
This move comes after the departure of Koeman, who concluded his second stint at the helm of the national team following the elimination in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, where the Netherlands fell to Morocco in a penalty shootout.
A long-awaited return to the bench
After a break of more than two years in his coaching career, Xavi Hernández returns to professional activity. His last experience on the bench was at the helm of Barcelona, an institution he managed from October 2021 to May 2024 and with which he managed to lift the LaLiga and Supercopa de España titles in 2023.
The new Dutch coach had previously expressed his interest in managing a national team and competing in major international tournaments.
It is a remarkable coincidence that, just as it happened at Barcelona in 2021, Xavi is once again the successor to Ronald Koeman, now taking on the challenge of leading a national team for the first time in his professional career.
The path to the future
- Official debut: Xavi Hernández’s debut will be on September 24th against Germany, in a match corresponding to the Nations League.
- Main objective: The Spanish coach’s mission will be to rebuild the Dutch team’s footballing identity and consolidate a solid project ahead of the 2030 World Cup cycle.
With this appointment, the Dutch Federation is betting on Hernández’s tactical vision to renew its aspirations on the international stage, marking the beginning of a new era for Dutch football.
