Mental health: A collective commitment on World Suicide Prevention Day
Every September 10th, the global community comes together to commemorate World Suicide Prevention Day. This day, promoted by international organizations, seeks to raise awareness of the critical importance of mental health and to work actively on reducing mortality rates from this cause, which continues to represent an urgent challenge for today’s society.
A global issue that requires attention
The statistics are alarming: every year, more than 700,000 people lose their lives to suicide. This phenomenon stands as one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with a particularly concerning incidence among young people aged 15 to 29. Likewise, it is estimated that for every completed case, at least 20 people attempt to take their own lives, which underscores the magnitude of a crisis that demands a comprehensive and constant response.
Under the motto “Creating hope through action,” an urgent call is made to governments and institutions to strengthen public policies and guarantee effective access to professional psychological care.
Actions and prevention in the Dominican Republic
In our country, various entities, educational centers, and social organizations have joined this cause through awareness campaigns. The main objective is to destigmatize mental disorders and foster an environment where seeking professional help is seen as a necessary and courageous step. Experts emphasize the importance of identifying warning signs, such as sudden isolation, drastic changes in behavior, loss of interest in usual activities, and comments that reflect hopelessness.
Practical guide for prevention
- Listen with empathy and without making value judgments.
- Maintain constant and close communication with those going through a crisis.
- Be attentive to changes in behavior or expressions of deep discouragement.
- Always encourage seeking assistance from psychologists or psychiatrists.
- Promote a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise, adequate rest, and good nutrition.
- Accompany people at risk, avoiding leaving them alone in moments of vulnerability.
