International Snakebite Awareness Day: A call for prevention

Every September 19th, International Snakebite Awareness Day is commemorated, a key date to raise awareness about the global impact of this public health issue. The central purpose of this day is to educate the population about existing risks, promote effective preventive measures, and reduce the incidence of these dangerous encounters in vulnerable communities.

A large-scale public health problem

The figures presented by international health organizations are alarming. It is estimated that each year, between 81,000 and 138,000 people lose their lives due to venomous snakebites worldwide. In addition to the high mortality rate, the physical and social impact is devastating:

  • Up to 400,000 people suffer permanent disabilities or severe disfigurement following an attack.
  • Victims frequently face discrimination and social isolation within their communities.
  • The loss of work capacity leads to economic instability, the accumulation of debt, and a marked deterioration in quality of life.
  • The psychological impact and mental health of survivors are severely affected following the traumatic event.

Awareness is the most effective tool for saving lives. Understanding the behavior of these animals and how to avoid close encounters is vital for the safety of those who live or work in high-risk areas.

Global actions and government commitment

Recognizing the magnitude of this crisis, in 2017 a decisive step was taken by including snakebite envenoming on the list of highest-priority neglected tropical diseases. Subsequently, in May 2018, a resolution was unanimously adopted requiring governments around the world to implement concrete strategies and collaborate closely with health institutions to mitigate this risk, ensuring better care and prevention globally.
