Justice for Yanely Yohanna Soto: Public Prosecutor’s Office requests pretrial detention for her attacker
The Public Prosecutor’s Office has formalized a request for pretrial detention against Wirme Manuel Geraldo, identified as the person responsible for the femicide of his ex-partner, Yanely Yohanna Soto. The tragic event, which has shocked the residents of the San Carlos sector in the National District, took place on September 6th.
The motion was filed with the Judicial Office of Permanent Care Services of the National District by prosecutor Topacio Suero Sierra, who is leading the investigation from the Prosecutor’s Office Department of Crimes and Offenses against the Person.
Details of the tragic incident
According to preliminary investigations, the crime occurred during the night at the lottery kiosk where the victim worked. The file details that the accused waited patiently for the young woman to finish her workday to intercept her and brutally assault her with a blunt object, fleeing the scene immediately afterward.
The discovery of the victim was possible the following day, when a coworker showed up at the establishment after noticing the absence of the daily reports. Upon finding Soto seriously injured, she immediately notified the 9-1-1 National Emergency and Security Attention System.
The victim remained in intensive care following the attack, but unfortunately lost their life on September 12, 2026, due to the severity of the injuries sustained.
Ongoing judicial process
- Capture: Wirme Manuel Geraldo was arrested on September 13th by means of a judicial warrant.
- Legal classification: The Public Prosecutor’s Office has classified the case under Article 93 of the new Dominican Penal Code (Law No. 74-25).
- Next steps: The Judicial Office of Permanent Attention Services of the National District will be in charge of hearing the coercive measure, where the prosecuting body will seek for the defendant to remain in preventive detention given the evidence presented.
