Legal uncertainty surrounds the inheritance of the late actress Hayden Panettiere
The passing of renowned actress Hayden Panettiere, at the age of 36, has left a void in the entertainment industry and, at the same time, a complex question regarding the fate of her estate. The star of iconic productions such as “Heroes,” “Nashville,” and the “Scream” saga, departed without it being made public whether she had a will or trust, which has sparked a legal dispute over her assets and residual rights.
The actress’s main heir is her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, who currently resides in Europe under the custody of her father, former boxer Wladimir Klitschko. The lack of clarity regarding Panettiere’s estate planning has led legal experts in California to analyze the possible legal scenarios that will determine who will manage the young girl’s financial legacy.
What do California laws say about the actress’s estate?
According to inheritance law specialists, the process will depend entirely on the legal instruments that the actress may have left prepared before her passing:
- Trust scenario: The assets would be transferred directly to the trust, which would be responsible for distributing the assets to the designated beneficiaries.
- Will scenario: The estate would follow the California probate process, respecting the wishes expressed by the actress in said document.
- Intestacy scenario: If no legal document existed, the intestacy laws of the state of California would apply.
Under California law, if you are a resident, you are given what I call a free will. You don’t have to pay for it. Everyone who lives in California has a will, and your property goes to your heirs. In this case, it is most likely that your property will go to your daughter.

Experts agree that, under current regulations, it is highly likely that all assets will be allocated to his daughter. However, since Kaya is a minor, she does not have the legal capacity to manage an inheritance of this magnitude. Therefore, the law requires the creation of protective instruments to safeguard the assets until she reaches the age of majority.
Although the actress’s parents would not inherit under standard rules since there is a direct descendant, certain assets such as life insurance or retirement accounts could have previously designated beneficiaries, which would allow other people to receive funds independently of the main probate process. The final resolution of this case continues to be a point of attention for the industry and the public figure’s followers.
