UASD reinforces culture of prevention during National Evacuation Drill
The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) reaffirmed its commitment to safety and risk management by actively participating in the National Earthquake Evacuation Drill. The university’s rector, Dr. Jorge Asjana David, led the event, highlighting that the protection of life is a non-negotiable priority for the institution.
From early hours, the university’s Disaster Risk Management Directorate coordinated the necessary protocols in conjunction with the Emergency Operations Center (COE) and the Civil Defense. The main objective was to evaluate the response capacity in the event of a major seismic event.
Effectiveness in response times
The preventive drill began at 10:00 a.m. with the activation of alarms at critical points on campus, including the faculties, the Pedro Mir Library, the University Seismological Institute, and the Administrative Tower. In the latter, administrative staff and visitors managed to complete the evacuation to the safe meeting points in a record time of 5 minutes and 22 seconds.
Joining this exercise convened by the Dominican State is a sign of our ethical commitment to the safety of thousands of families represented in our university community. Through our Disaster Risk Management Directorate, we maintain a constant evaluation of evacuation routes, response brigades, and signage throughout the campus to act with speed and efficiency in the face of any contingency.

After finishing the exercise, university authorities expressed their satisfaction with the exemplary behavior shown by students, faculty, and administrative staff during the preventive evacuation. Dr. Asjana David emphasized that the university will continue to promote this type of training to consolidate a resilient campus prepared for any natural challenge.
