In an operation coordinated by U.S. authorities, two Dominican citizens were arrested, identified as the perpetrators of the assault and stabbing of Detective José Mercedes, an active member of the New York Police Department (NYPD). The arrest took place in the city of Lynn, Massachusetts, following an intense search that extended beyond New York territory.

The suspects, identified as Dangelo Rafael Jean Caraballo, 25, and Sneider Mejía Bautista, 24, were located on the night of last Tuesday, October 6. According to the official report, both individuals were hiding in the basement of a home in Lynn. The operation involved the participation of specialized investigators and the U.S. Marshals Service, achieving the apprehension of those involved without them offering any resistance.

The incident in The Bronx

The attack against Detective Mercedes, a native of Nizao, Dominican Republic, occurred on Friday, October 2, in the Norwood section of The Bronx. The officer, who was off-duty, was surprised by the assailants while he was near his personal vehicle.

Detective Mercedes was intercepted by the two individuals with the goal of stealing a gold chain from him. During the struggle, the officer received seven stab wounds to various parts of his body before the attackers fled on a motorcycle.
