Tragedy in Colombia: Son of Bahía Solano mayor passes away after devastating earthquake
The department of Chocó is in mourning following the recent 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook much of the Colombian territory. Among the confirmed fatalities, the tragic passing of little Mateo Valencia Valencia, just six years old, son of Leonel Valencia, mayor of the municipality of Bahía Solano, was reported.
The minor lost their life after the structure they were in collapsed as a result of the strong seismic movement. According to official reports, the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the town of San José del Palmar, also in Chocó, an area that has felt the devastating consequences of this natural disaster with great intensity.
Authorities express their condolences
The governor of Chocó, Nubia Carolina Córdoba-Curi, confirmed the news and extended her solidarity to the local leader and his loved ones. The official detailed that, so far, the department has recorded a total of 13 fatalities due to the seismic event.

Likewise, former Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo joined the message of support for Mayor Leonel Valencia and his wife, Yirley Valencia, offering prayers for the strength and serenity of the Bahía Solano community in the face of this irreparable loss.
National assessment after the earthquake
Nationwide, the death toll has risen to 132 people. The tragedy has deeply affected various regions, highlighting the impact in the Valle del Cauca department, where the death of at least four minors has been confirmed. Relief agencies continue to work in the affected areas to assist those impacted and carry out the necessary rescue efforts following the impact of the earthquake.
