Tragedy in São Paulo: Building collapse leaves at least two dead

A regrettable tragedy shook the Penha neighborhood in the east zone of São Paulo this Saturday, following the collapse of a building under construction that fell onto a home inhabited by a dozen citizens of Bolivian origin.

The preliminary toll of the incident, which occurred during the early hours of the morning, is two women deceased. Emergency teams that arrived at the scene managed to rescue a man and a minor alive, who were transported to nearby medical centers to receive medical attention.

Rescue efforts and status of the work

Search and rescue efforts remain active at the disaster site. Due to the instability of the structure and the risk of further collapses, rescuers have had to carry out debris removal tasks manually, using buckets to remove materials stone by stone in their effort to locate potential survivors.

According to preliminary reports from the authorities, the damaged building had several floors and was under a foreclosure order, so construction work was technically suspended. Although the property was not intended for residential use, authorities confirmed that two workers used to stay overnight at the site.

Although the collapse occurred in the middle of a night of intense rainfall in the capital of São Paulo, the Civil Defense has clarified that it is not possible to determine, at the moment, that the rains were the determining factor of the collapse.
