United States reinforces humanitarian aid for vulnerable families in Cuba

In a continuous effort to assist the most needy sectors of the Cuban population, the United States has sent a new shipment consisting of 700 food kits and 700 hygiene supply packages. This assistance, channeled through the Catholic Church, has the primary objective of providing support to families facing a situation of high vulnerability in the province of Cienfuegos.

The supply recently landed at the Abel Santamaría International Airport, located in Santa Clara. The reception logistics were handled by the diocese that covers Cienfuegos and the municipality of Trinidad, under the supervision of the vicar general, Father Manel Homar Toboso, and the director of Diocesan Caritas, Ana Isabel Palenque Guillemí.

Priority for the most needy groups

In accordance with the guidelines of Caritas Cuba, the distribution of supplies will be carried out immediately in the town of Lajas and its surrounding communities. The selection of beneficiaries is based on a prior survey conducted by volunteers, who have identified households with food insecurity and critical difficulties in accessing drinking water.

The priority criteria established for this delivery include the following groups:

  • Adults over 60 years old.
  • People with disabilities or bedridden patients.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women.
  • Children under 5 years old.

Scope of the assistance program

This shipment is part of a broader humanitarian strategy that has a 60 million dollar fund, derived from a larger assistance plan. The use of the Caritas network allows aid to arrive directly through parish structures, ensuring transparent and efficient management on the ground.

Collaboration with the Catholic Church is essential to ensure that resources reach those who truly need them, allowing for a distribution based on a deep knowledge of community needs.

The United States Embassy has confirmed that this plan will not be limited solely to Cienfuegos. It is expected that, in the coming weeks, new shipments will arrive in provinces such as Camagüey, Ciego de Ávila, Matanzas, and Pinar del Río, although the exact dates and the total volume that these regions will receive have not yet been specified.

This initiative is being developed in a complex scenario, marked by a severe shortage of basic products and hygiene goods throughout the Cuban territory, situations that have been aggravated by current diplomatic and economic tensions.
