São Paulo faces a historic September due to unprecedented rainfall
The city of São Paulo, recognized as the most populous metropolis in South America, is going through a critical climate situation by recording the rainiest September since official records began in 1943. Although barely two weeks of the month have passed, the amount of rainfall has surpassed all previous historical records.
According to reports from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), one of the monitoring stations in the capital of São Paulo reached an accumulated volume of 253.8 millimeters of rain this Monday. This figure is striking as it is three times higher than the historical average established for the entire month of September, which stands at 83.3 millimeters.
Breaking decades-old records
The previous highest record in the city dated back to 1983, the year in which 243.1 millimeters of rain were recorded. Although years such as 1957, 1993, and 2015 also presented high levels, none managed to come close to the current records. Experts warn that, because the month has not yet ended, the figure could climb even further.
More rainfall is forecast for the coming days, so the monthly total could increase even further by the end of the month, extending the current record.

Impact and security measures
Faced with this situation, the Government of São Paulo has activated a crisis cabinet since last Friday to monitor the state, which is home to some 46 million inhabitants. The intense rains have caused flooding in various neighborhoods and have affected strategic road arteries, extending their impact also to inland towns such as Campinas and Registro.
The meteorological phenomenon, which also affects neighboring states such as Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, is caused by the movement of a cold front across the Atlantic Ocean, which has facilitated the entry of cold air over the south-central region of the country.
Sports preparation for the rainy season
In other news, the sports world remains attentive to weather conditions. The Leones del Escogido have confirmed that they will begin their practice sessions on September 25th, with their sights set on the start of the 2026-27 season, a process that must be coordinated according to field conditions and preparation logistics.
