Severe sanction for Ruti Aga: Six years out of athletics for doping and manipulation

The world of long-distance running has received shocking news. Ethiopian runner Ruti Aga, recognized for her outstanding career in international marathons, has been suspended for a period of six years by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU). This drastic decision comes after a positive result in an anti-doping test was confirmed and, most seriously, a deliberate attempt to obstruct justice through the falsification of medical documents.

The facts that led to the suspension

The controversy began on March 15, when Aga claimed victory at the Meishan Renshou half marathon in China. Following the competition, tests revealed the presence of methylprednisolone, a substance classified under the S9 category of glucocorticoids, which is prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) during competition days.

However, the sanction was significantly aggravated due to the subsequent actions of the 32-year-old athlete. During the investigation, Aga attempted to justify the use of the substance by claiming a medical treatment for a knee injury. To support her defense, she presented a medical prescription that turned out to be a sham:

  • The prescription came from a non-existent clinic.
  • The alleged doctor who signed the document turned out to be a relative of the athlete without a professional license.
  • The mentioned medical center confirmed that said person was never part of their staff.

The AIU determined that, in addition to the doping violation, the athlete committed a serious integrity breach by attempting to deceive the authorities with forged documents, which resulted in a combined sanction of six years out of any official competition.

A brilliant history tarnished

This sanction represents a devastating setback for Aga’s career, who had established herself as one of the most consistent long-distance runners on the world circuit. Her record includes memorable performances in the most demanding events on the planet:

  • Victory at the 2019 Tokyo Marathon.
  • Multiple podium finishes at the Berlin Marathon (2016, 2017, and 2018).
  • Third place at the prestigious 2019 New York City Marathon.

With this measure, the Athletics Integrity Unit reaffirms its zero-tolerance policy, not only regarding the use of prohibited substances but also against any attempt to manipulate anti-doping control processes, a clear message for high-performance sport.
