Russia and Ukraine complete exchange of 103 prisoners of war

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported this Wednesday on the execution of a new prisoner of war exchange, achieving the return of 103 Russian soldiers who were under Ukrainian control. In reciprocity, Moscow handed over 103 other members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to the Kiev authorities, in a process that seeks to ease tension between both nations.

According to the official statement issued through messaging channels, the Russian military personnel were initially transferred to Belarus. On Belarusian territory, the soldiers received specialized medical care and psychological support to ensure their stability after the period of captivity.

The mediation of the United Arab Emirates

The success of this humanitarian operation was possible thanks to the mediation of the United Arab Emirates, a country that has played a key role in recent negotiations to facilitate these exchanges. Russian authorities confirmed that the soldiers were received by the ombudswoman, Yana Landratova, who oversaw the return process.

International cooperation and humanitarian mediation have been fundamental for these 103 Russian soldiers to be able to return home after receiving the necessary care in Belarus.

Background of the exchanges

  • The last large-scale exchange took place on June 26, when 160 prisoners were exchanged on each side.
  • On August 13, an exchange of detained civilians was carried out, involving eight Russian citizens and seven Ukrainians.
  • On that same date, the handover of bodies of fallen soldiers was carried out, totaling 261 Ukrainians and 24 Russians repatriated.

This new movement adds to the diplomatic efforts seeking to mitigate the human impact derived from the conflict in the region, maintaining expectations for future similar agreements that allow the return of more combatants to their respective countries.
