Rain in Santo Domingo: Traffic chaos and opportunity for motorcycle transport
The intense rains recorded since the early hours of this Thursday in Santo Domingo caused a complicated morning for thousands of citizens. The bad weather not only generated momentary flooding on various roads, but also triggered traffic congestion, significantly hindering travel to workplaces and causing widespread delays.
The situation forced many workers to leave their homes much earlier, although for the majority, the measure was insufficient given the slow flow of traffic. The shortage of public transport and the difficulty of traveling on foot during the downpours set the tone for the day.
I had to leave earlier because I knew it was going to rain, but I was still late. The traffic was terrible and with the rain everything slows down.

Two realities in the rain
While for the average citizen the situation translated into stress and delays, for motorcycle taxi drivers the morning represented an economic opportunity. Faced with the impossibility of moving forward in closed vehicles, many passengers opted for motorcycle services to bypass traffic jams and arrive at their destinations on time.
- High demand: Motorcyclists reported a higher request for services since the beginning of the day.
- Profitability: Some drivers claimed to have increased their daily income significantly in a few hours, reaching figures of up to RD$1,600 during the morning.
- User preferences: The speed of the motorcycle compared to traditional public transport became the preferred option for those seeking to mitigate the effects of bad weather on their work punctuality.
In short, the day made it evident how weather conditions alter the urban routine in the capital. What for some meant a day full of setbacks amidst the wet asphalt, for others it was an opportunity to capitalize on the urgency of those who needed to fulfill their responsibilities despite the inclement weather.
