Rain prevents Trevor Bauer’s debut in the LIDOM

Trevor Bauer’s highly anticipated debut in the Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) had to wait. The American pitcher, a Cy Young Award winner, saw his first outing with the Estrellas Orientales postponed this Tuesday due to adverse weather conditions affecting much of the national territory, which forced the suspension of the entire day of the tournament.

Despite the setback, the 35-year-old pitcher remains optimistic. Bauer highlighted that his enthusiasm for joining the team based in San Pedro de Macorís remains firm, focused on contributing to the green team to climb the standings.

I’m excited about it. I’ve been to see a couple of games and the fans are crazy, there’s good baseball. Obviously I want to win for the team and perform well, but also enjoy playing, because baseball is a lot of fun here and that’s why I came to play.

A challenge on the mound

When analyzing the level of competition in the Dominican league, the former Los Angeles Dodgers and Cincinnati Reds pitcher acknowledged that local talent presents interesting challenges. Bauer joked about the average velocity of the pitches he has observed in the circuit.

  • The pitcher noted that the high velocity of pitchers in the Caribbean represents a technical challenge.
  • He expressed curiosity about adapting to a style of play different from what he has faced in other international leagues.
  • His main goal is to connect with the fans and experience the intensity that characterizes Dominican stadiums.

Trajectory and current status

Bauer, who won the National League Cy Young in 2020, has had a career marked by various ups and downs following his departure from Major League Baseball in 2021. After facing investigations and a suspension imposed by MLB, the pitcher has sought to remain active in professional baseball.

In recent years, he has ventured into baseball in Japan and Mexico, in addition to participating in independent leagues in the United States, always seeking to regain his competitive level. His arrival in the LIDOM represents a new opportunity to demonstrate his quality and regain prominence on the diamond, this time under the uniform of the Estrellas Orientales.
