The Queens of the Caribbean impose their rule against Puerto Rico in the NORCECA Continental Championship
In a vibrant day at the “Prof. Ricardo Gioriber Arias” Volleyball Palace, the Dominican Republic women’s national volleyball team, our Queens of the Caribbean, achieved an important victory by defeating Puerto Rico 3-1. The match, corresponding to the third day of the 2026 NORCECA Continental Championship, reaffirmed the dominance of the Dominicans before a fan base that packed the facilities of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center.
Although the national team conceded the first set with a score of 21-25, the team made the necessary adjustments at the net and in their offensive scheme to reverse the situation. With a display of grit and precision, the Dominicans dominated the next three sets with scores of 25-19, 25-21, and 25-23, thus securing a key result in the group stage.
Road to international qualification
With this victory, the Dominican team remains firm in the contention for Group B, which they share with Cuba, Costa Rica, and Puerto Rico. The tournament structure establishes that the leaders of each group will earn a direct pass to the semifinal round, while the teams positioned in second and third place must face each other in the quarterfinals to stay alive in the competition.
The victory against the Puerto Ricans not only represents a step forward in the regional tournament, but also reinforces the path of the Queens of the Caribbean toward their long-term international goals, including the Olympic cycle toward Los Angeles 2028.
Clear goals for the season
Beyond defending their regional title, the Dominican team has its sights set on larger goals:
- Obtaining one of the three spots available for the 2027 Women’s World Championship.
- Strategic preparation for the NORCECA Continental Qualifier, which will take place on August 28 and 29 in Santo Domingo.
- Seeking the Olympic ticket granted by the aforementioned qualifier.
Having recently conquered their seventh consecutive title at the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, the team arrives at this championship with the necessary emotional momentum to maintain their hegemony. The Queens of the Caribbean continue to demonstrate why they are the benchmark for volleyball in the region, focused on closing the season with new achievements that make the country proud.
