UEFA opens disciplinary case against PSG for offensive banner against Barcelona

The atmosphere at the Parc des Princes during the recent Champions League clash between Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona was marred by actions that have raised alarms at European football’s governing body. UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Parisian club following the display of a banner with violent content by its radical groups.

The slogan, which read ‘Massacre à la parisienne’ (Parisian-style massacre), was accompanied by a graphic depiction of a masked man wielding a chainsaw, a clear cinematic allusion that sought to intimidate the Barcelona team and destroy their crest. This demonstration, which took place moments before the opening whistle, did not go unnoticed by the authorities present.

Actions and possible sanctions

Following PSG’s 4-2 victory, the FC Barcelona delegation confirmed that they would file a formal complaint with the UEFA delegate so that the incident would be duly recorded in the official match report. This document is the key piece that the Disciplinary Committee will use to evaluate the measures to be taken.

Among the possible consequences for the French entity are:

  • Significant financial fines for the transmission of inappropriate messages.
  • Partial stadium closure in future European fixtures.
  • Conduct reviews due to the recurrence of their fans’ behavior.

UEFA’s disciplinary code is clear regarding the display of messages that contravene the values of sport and safety at football events. The use of flares and the offensive chants recorded during the match will also be part of the disciplinary proceedings.

It is worth remembering that PSG has recent disciplinary precedents. After the 2025 Champions League final, where the Parisian club won the title against Inter Milan, the institution was fined 148,000 euros for various incidents, including pitch invasion, throwing objects, and derogatory messages against UEFA itself.

At that time, UEFA ruled a conditional ban on ticket sales for Parisian fans at away matches, a measure that could now be tightened if the club is considered to have repeated its behavior during the current probationary period.
