Project promoted to integrate seismic education into the Dominican school system

Given the need to strengthen the culture of prevention in the Dominican Republic, Deputy Domingo de León has formally presented a draft resolution to the Chamber of Deputies. The initiative seeks for the Executive Branch to instruct the Ministry of Education to include seismic education as a mandatory subject in the national curriculum.

The legislator emphasizes that the country is situated on active geological faults, which makes citizen preparedness a national security priority. The proposal arises in a context where national evacuation drills have gained prominence as essential tools for measuring response capacity to natural disasters.

Beyond theoretical training, De León has expressed concern for the physical safety of the students. According to the arguments presented in the resolution, various structural assessments have determined that at least 34 educational centers present critical conditions, and therefore must be demolished as they do not guarantee the integrity of the students in the event of a major seismic event.

Training in earthquake prevention and response is essential to reduce the population’s vulnerability and prepare citizens to act correctly during an emergency.

Context and next steps

  • The country maintains the 8.1 magnitude earthquake recorded in 1946 as a historical reference.
  • The initiative seeks to raise prevention standards after years of seismic vulnerability.
  • The project contemplates the creation of a special commission of legislators to formally present the request to President Luis Abinader.

With this measure, Alofoke Deportes highlights the legislative effort to integrate risk management into Dominican education, promoting a generation that is more aware and capable of safeguarding their lives in the face of the national territory’s geological challenges.
