PLD questions public investment levels of Luis Abinader’s administration

The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) has reacted to the challenge issued by President Luis Abinader, who proposed comparing the works executed during his six years in office against the 20 years of previous administrations. The opposition organization questioned the effectiveness and scope of current public investment, describing it as insufficient compared to past periods.

Temístocles Montás, a leader of the political organization, stated that a detailed analysis of public investment reveals a significant decrease during the administration of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). According to Montás, when contrasting current figures with those recorded under the mandate of former President Danilo Medina, the results do not favor the current government.

What is real is that in recent years, under the PRM governments, public investment has hit rock bottom. If you compare it with the governments of our colleague Danilo Medina, public investment is not what he says it is.

Differences in budget execution

The former Minister of Economy made a fundamental technical distinction by pointing out that capital expenditure and public investment should not be considered equivalent. Montás explained that, although the Government projects capital expenditure close to 2.7% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the year 2027, this does not translate directly into finished or executed infrastructure works.

  • The PLD warns that the 2027 Budget shows an increase in the fiscal deficit.
  • The organization points out that real public investment, according to the National Public Investment System, stands at nearly 1.2% of GDP.
  • Montás maintains that this behavior has been a constant during the Luis Abinader administrations.

The context of the presidential challenge

This debate arises following President Abinader’s statements during the inauguration of the Nizao-Sabana Larga-Ocoa highway. In that setting, the president defended his administration, highlighting the impact of the works in the Southern region and challenging the opposition to evaluate the results of his administration in comparison with previous decades.

The head of state has emphasized that his focus has been to address local needs through the construction of educational centers, sports facilities, and communication routes, maintaining his stance that his six-year tenure has a direct and positive impact on Dominican communities.
