Tragedy in the Amazon: Peruvian soldier dies during operation against illegal mining
A regrettable event has brought mourning to the security forces in Peru. The Navy reported the death of Second Lieutenant Álvaro Cáceres, who lost his life while participating in an operation against illegal mining in the Tambopata National Reserve, located in the Amazonian region of Madre de Dios.
So far, the military institution has not specified the exact circumstances under which the incident occurred during the deployment carried out this Monday. Given the tragic outcome, the Navy has initiated a formal investigation to clarify the facts, while various authorities, including the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp), have expressed their condolences to the family of the fallen officer.

The Ministry of Defense highlighted that the military deployment, which was supported by helicopters to access difficult-to-reach areas such as Quebrada Gamitanal, Aguas Negras, and Otorongo, dealt a severe blow to illegal mining structures. According to official reports, the value of the destroyed goods and equipment amounts to 8.3 million soles, a figure close to 2.5 million dollars.
