Transport union demands permanent migration alert in mobility systems
The National Federation of Christian Social Transport Workers (FENATTRANSC) has made an urgent call to President Luis Abinader to implement a stricter migration control strategy within mass transit systems in the Dominican Republic. Mario Díaz, spokesperson for the organization, maintains that the increase in people with irregular migration status using these services is affecting public order and safety.
Safety in transport and public spaces
Díaz emphasized that the sector’s concern extends to security at critical points, citing as a reference the recent incidents that occurred at the Olympic Stadium. According to the leader, it is imperative to reinforce surveillance not only on the streets, but also in key infrastructure such as the Santo Domingo Metro, the Cable Car, bus corridors, and public transport and cargo units.
We cannot allow our transportation system to become a space without immigration or security controls. The State must regain control and ensure that everyone who uses our services does so within the framework of the law.

Recent actions and call for accountability
The guild’s request coincides with recent interventions by the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant), which has intensified inspections in tourist areas. An example of these measures was the operation carried out in Friusa, Bávaro, where five buses operated by foreign citizens who did not have the required immigration documentation were impounded.
- Exhortation to drivers and operators to avoid transporting irregular individuals and to avoid complicity.
- Proposal to create an inter-institutional working group between the Government, security agencies, and transport unions.
- Request to implement clear migration security protocols that respect the Constitution and fundamental rights.
Strengthening border surveillance
Finally, the union leader urged the Executive Branch to strengthen surveillance on the Dominican-Haitian border through the use of technology and intelligence. Díaz stressed the importance of applying exemplary sanctions against any member of the military or police forces caught collaborating with human trafficking networks, underscoring that national security must prevail over any other consideration.
