Pedro Sánchez declines the invitation to Donald Trump’s reception at the UN
The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, will not be part of the official reception that the US President, Donald Trump, will host in New York on the occasion of the start of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. According to official information, this decision is strictly due to scheduling conflicts.
Government spokesperson Elma Saiz clarified from Madrid that the invitation issued by the U.S. administration arrived when the Chief Executive’s travel schedule was already fully structured. As Saiz detailed, a trip of this international significance requires meticulous planning well in advance, which makes it impossible to include new commitments on the fly.
Those readings are absurd, if not deceitful.

For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has dismissed any interpretation suggesting a diplomatic snub, describing such speculations as unfounded. It should be noted that this is not the first time that Sánchez has been absent from this social event; in previous years, the Spanish presence has varied depending on the delegation led by the Head of State or due to overlaps with his speeches before the plenary session of the Assembly.

Despite not attending the reception, Pedro Sánchez’s agenda in New York remains intense and focused on the summit’s priority issues. The Prime Minister will actively participate in the high-level sessions, accompanied by the Third Vice President, Sara Aagesen, and Minister Albares.
