Pedro Sánchez calls early general elections in Spain for November 29
In a high-impact political move, the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, announced this Monday the dissolution of the Cortes Generales and the calling of early elections for next November 29th. The decision was communicated after an official audience with King Felipe VI, marking an unexpected turn in the country’s political agenda.
Sánchez made the measure official through an institutional statement from the Moncloa Palace. Subsequently, he convened an extraordinary Council of Ministers with the aim of formalizing the dissolution of Parliament and formally initiating the electoral process.
Reasons behind the early election
The president explained that this determination responds to the need to strengthen parliamentary support and social legitimacy to continue with the Executive’s reform program. The last week was marked by legislative tensions, especially regarding housing policies, a topic that has generated intense debates in Congress.
To do more, we need to renew and expand people’s support.

During his speech, Sánchez engaged in self-criticism regarding his administration, acknowledging that there are still significant challenges that the Government has not fully managed to resolve, among which he highlighted:
- The persistence of social inequality.
- The challenges in managing public services.
- The difficulties citizens face in accessing decent housing.
A change in the political calendar
This announcement represents a drastic change from the initial forecasts. Just last June, Sánchez had ratified before Congress his commitment to exhaust the four-year legislative term, placing the general elections in 2027. However, after evaluating the complex parliamentary scenario over the weekend, the head of the Executive opted to return the word to the citizens.
“The time has therefore come for the Spanish people to decide what future you want for yourselves and for your country,” the president stressed. The electoral process will officially come into effect once the call is published in the Official State Gazette, kicking off the race to the polls on November 29.
