Estrellas Orientales secure the return of Patrick Weigel for the next LIDOM season

The Estrellas Orientales have confirmed the return of American right-handed pitcher Patrick Weigel, who rejoins the team for the upcoming season of the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League, scheduled to begin on October 16. The reliever has become a fundamental piece of the San Pedro de Macorís team after showing exceptional dominance in his last two appearances in the winter circuit.

Ángel Ovalles, Vice President of Baseball Operations for the Estrellas, highlighted the importance of having such a high-caliber arm once again. According to the executive, Weigel’s versatility will be the central axis around which the team’s bullpen will be structured for the upcoming campaign.

He was the best reliever in the league over the past two seasons. Our bullpen will be built around him, as he is a man who can close, pitch two innings, or come in during a high-leverage situation at any moment in the final innings of the game to save the day.

Statistics that support their dominance

Weigel’s performance in Dominican baseball has been outstanding, standing out for his ability to limit opposing hitters and maintain control in critical moments. His numbers over the last two campaigns with the Estrellas are proof of his impact on the mound:

  • Total accumulated: 3-2 record, 1.28 ERA and five saves in 41 regular season games.
  • 2023-2024 season: 1.19 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 30.1 innings and a 0.66 WHIP.
  • 2024-2025 season: 2-0 record, 0.95 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP in 18 appearances.

In addition to his contribution with the Estrellas, Weigel proved his worth by being selected as a reinforcement by the Leones del Escogido during the Round Robin stage, where he maintained a 1.13 ERA in eight outings, solidifying his reputation as one of the most reliable arms in the tournament.

Strengthening the roster

With this announcement, Patrick Weigel joins outfielder Ismael Munguía as the first imports confirmed by the eastern management. Munguía, who was the batting champion in the last campaign with a .368 average, along with Weigel’s experience, positions the Estrellas Orientales as a competitive team from the first day of action in the winter championship.
