Nicaraguan Army reports massive drug seizure in the last year
In the framework of the commemoration of the 47th anniversary of its founding, the Nicaraguan Army presented a detailed report on its security operations, highlighting the frontal fight against drug trafficking. General Julio César Avilés, head of the institution, reported that in the last 12 months, the seizure of 1,381 kilograms of illicit substances was achieved, including cocaine and marijuana.
During this same period, the authorities managed to capture 80 people directly linked to these shipments, who are already at the disposal of the justice system to face the corresponding charges.
History of the fight against drug trafficking
The official report highlights Nicaragua’s consistency in regional security. With the results obtained in the last year, the total figure of drugs seized by the Army since the year 2000 amounts to more than 199,000 kilograms.
Thanks to our constant operations against drug trafficking, we manage to divert more than 800 tons of drugs annually that do not circulate through the national territory, because the transit moves by sea and air more than 500 miles away from our coasts.

Retaining Wall Strategy
Nicaragua maintains an active national strategy called the Containment Wall. The main objective of this plan is to prevent both drugs and capital derived from illicit activities from infiltrating the country’s population centers. To ensure the success of this mission, the country maintains cooperation agreements with various nations, including:

- Mexico
- Russia
- Allied countries in the region
Nicaragua’s geographical position is a critical factor, as it is located in the natural corridor that connects drug production in South America with consumer markets in North America, where major international cartels operate.
