The Metropolitano Stadium in Barranquilla transforms for the Copa Sudamericana final
The Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez stadium, iconic home of the Colombian national team and Junior de Barranquilla, is going through its final stage of renovation. With an investment exceeding 45 million dollars, the Barranquilla colossus seeks to consolidate itself as the most modern and largest capacity sports venue in Colombia, preparing to host the grand final of the Copa Sudamericana on November 21st.
The project, which began in January of this year, will increase the stadium’s capacity from 43,000 to 65,000 spectators. In addition, its versatility will allow the capacity to be extended to 75,000 people for massive events such as concerts by integrating the pitch area.
Technological and infrastructure innovations
One of the most significant changes has been the removal of the athletic track and the lowering of the playing field, a strategic measure to bring the stands closer to the action and optimize visibility for the fans. The playing field will feature Bermuda 419 hybrid grass, supported by state-of-the-art automated drainage and irrigation systems, ideal for the area’s tropical climate.
- Smart facade: System of 74,000 LED lights capable of projecting animations and colors.
- Connectivity: Installation of 4K screens and a 500-meter perimeter LED strip.
- Comfort: Incorporation of 10,800 retractable seats and tripling of restroom capacity.
- Accessibility: Expansion of access points from four to fourteen entrances.
Modernization is not only focused on the field, but also on the visitor experience, including new VIP areas, modern press rooms, and museums dedicated to the history of Junior and the national team.
Economic impact and venue confirmation
Following recent technical visits, the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) ratified Barranquilla as the official host city, confirming that the works comply with the required schedule. This event promises to be an economic engine for the region, with financial impact projections exceeding 60 million dollars.
The local hotel sector, with an offer of more than 9,000 rooms, is preparing for a full house. The final already has Boca Juniors as the first guest after defeating Vasco da Gama, while the second finalist will emerge from the duel between Atlético Mineiro and Montevideo City Torque.
A legacy that renews itself
Since its inauguration in 1986, the Metropolitano has witnessed memorable moments, from the 2001 Copa América to multiple World Cup qualifiers. With this profound intervention, Barranquilla is not only preparing for the Copa Sudamericana, but also reaffirming its status as a key epicenter for tourism and major sporting events at a continental level.
