Successful rescue: National Civil Police frees kidnapped merchant in Guatemala
In a high-precision tactical deployment, the Anti-Kidnapping Command of the National Civil Police (PNC) managed to rescue a 54-year-old merchant safe and sound who was being held against her will in the municipality of San José Pinula. The operation, carried out this Monday, August 10, at the Valle de Navarra condominium, allowed for the dismantling of a dangerous criminal gang linked to the Barrio 18 gang.

During the raid, the authorities neutralized six individuals allegedly involved in the kidnapping. According to the official report from Alofoke Deportes, among those detained are four Guatemalan citizens and two of Salvadoran nationality. The apprehended individuals were identified as:
- Andrea Álvarez Rosales (32 years old)
- Jorge Aníbal Álvarez Rosales (34 years old)
- Wilmer Adán Cruz (29 years old)
- Edgar Abel García (27 years old)
- Hilda Maribel Guardón González (26 years old), alias La Diabla
- Carlos Alfredo González Vázquez (35 years old)
The authorities seized various cell phones used by the criminal structure to intimidate the victim’s family and demand payments in exchange for their release.
The suspects have been placed at the disposal of the Tower of Courts to face due legal process. It should be noted that one of the detainees, Jorge Aníbal Álvarez Rosales, has a prior criminal record, having been captured in 2019 for crimes related to drug dealing in the same area of San José Pinula.
Intensifying the fight against kidnapping
This operation is part of a series of decisive actions that the PNC has implemented to combat the rise of kidnapping and extortion in Guatemalan territory. Specialized units have strengthened their intelligence efforts, establishing containment rings and strategic patrols to curb the express kidnapping modality that has affected urban areas.
Official statistics reflect the urgency of these measures: after recording 157 cases in 2024 and 345 in 2025, the trend during the first months of 2026 has shown a sustained increase, with more than 180 complaints reported. Given this reality, the authorities are calling on citizens to maintain trust in the security forces and to file formal complaints that allow for immediate responses to safeguard the lives of the victims.
