Juan Soto returns to the Mets lineup at a key moment of the season
Star Dominican outfielder Juan Soto has been officially activated by the New York Mets, marking his long-awaited return to the diamond after overcoming a left calf strain. The Quisqueyan, who had been out of action since July 24th, returns to the active roster to strengthen the New York team’s offense.
The injury, suffered during a matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers, kept Soto off the field for more than a month. However, after completing an intensive training session at Citi Field, the coaching staff determined that the player was ready to rejoin immediately, forgoing a rehabilitation assignment in the Minor Leagues.
A necessary boost for New York
To make room on the roster, the team sent infielder Eric Wagaman to the Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse. This move underscores the importance the Dominican player has for the Mets’ aspirations, as they look to stabilize their performance in the final stretch of the campaign.
The Dominican batter has played 84 games this season, in which he has a .283 batting average, a .408 on-base percentage, and a .539 slugging percentage, with 21 home runs and 52 runs batted in.
Statistics and expectations
Although this was his second visit to the injured list this year—having previously dealt with right calf discomfort during the month of April—Soto remained optimistic about his recovery. The slugger expressed his confidence in returning before the end of the season, feeling in optimal physical condition after the rigorous rehabilitation process.
Soto’s return comes at a moment when the Mets require consistency. Although they have achieved a 13-9 record since the trade deadline, the team was looking to break a three-game losing streak prior to this Saturday’s matchup against the Houston Astros. With the Dominican back, the Mets’ offense regains one of its fundamental pillars to try to secure a competitive end to the season.
