José Calderón promoted to assistant general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers organization has made official this Friday a strategic move in its management structure: the promotion of former Spanish player José Calderón to the position of assistant general manager. This appointment consolidates the former point guard’s career in NBA front offices following an outstanding career on the court.
Calderón, who joined the team in 2022 as a special advisor, has been a key piece in various franchise operations. According to the official statement issued by the team, the Spaniard has been fundamental in achieving institutional goals in both the sporting and administrative aspects.
A key role in international expansion
One of the most recent projects in which the former player has had a leading role is the organization of the training camp that the Cavaliers will hold in Andalusia, Spain, scheduled from September 30 to October 5 as a fundamental part of their preseason.

Trajectory of a basketball legend
Calderón’s connection to Cleveland is not new. As a player, he defended the franchise’s colors during the 2017-2018 season, reaching the NBA Finals, a milestone that marked his career. His journey in the American league began in the 2005-2006 season with the Toronto Raptors, after not being selected in the 2003 Draft.
Throughout his 14 seasons in the NBA, the Spaniard wore multiple uniforms:
- Toronto Raptors
- Dallas Mavericks
- New York Knicks
- Los Angeles Lakers
- Atlanta Hawks
- Detroit Pistons
- Cleveland Cavaliers
After retiring in 2019, Calderón did not step away from basketball. Before his current role in Cleveland, he served as a special assistant to the executive director at the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), where he worked closely with the organization’s leadership.
New stage in management
With this move, Calderón assumes the vacancy left by Brandon Weems, who was recently promoted to general manager. The Spaniard’s promotion reaffirms his successful transition from the court to sports management, bringing his vast experience as an international player and his deep knowledge of NBA dynamics to strengthen the Cavaliers’ competitive future.
