Israel commemorates the anniversary of the October 7 attacks

Israel experienced a day of deep reflection this Wednesday as it marked another anniversary of the offensive that began on October 7, 2023. Hundreds of citizens gathered at various points across the country to honor the memory of the nearly 1,200 fatalities and remember the 251 people who were kidnapped during the attacks led by Hamas, an event that triggered the war in the Gaza Strip.

The most significant meeting point was the Nova Festival area, near Kibbutz Re’im, where one of the greatest tragedies occurred with 400 deaths. Relatives, friends, and survivors gathered from early hours to lay flowers, leave letters, and light candles in an emotionally charged act.

Official voices and mass events

Israeli President Isaac Herzog led an official ceremony in Reim, where he reaffirmed his nation’s right to combat terrorism. Likewise, Herzog expressed his desire to achieve a lasting peace that allows neighboring peoples to coexist in conditions of security and stability.

The president called for peace, emphasizing the importance of all peoples in the region being able to live under the same conditions of tranquility and mutual respect.

For his part, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not present at the commemorative events. His absence occurs in a context of tensions, as various relatives of the victims have questioned the security management during that period, while the leader has denied having ignored previous warnings about an offensive of such magnitude.

International reach and current situation

  • In Tel Aviv, the main event brought together about 50,000 people in a massive display of grief and solidarity.
  • Commemorations extended beyond Israel’s borders, with remembrance events in the United States, various Latin American countries, and European nations.
  • Representatives of the European Union used the occasion to reiterate their condemnation of the attacks and their support for a two-state solution.

The commemoration takes place at a critical moment, as hostilities in Gaza continue and the international community maintains pressure to achieve a ceasefire. According to data from local authorities in Gaza, the total number of deaths in the enclave since the start of the conflict now exceeds 74,200 people.
