Weather in the Dominican Republic: Saharan dust and extreme heat will mark the weekend
The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET) has reported that weather conditions in the Dominican Republic will be influenced, during this Friday and Saturday, by the presence of an air mass with light to moderate concentrations of Saharan dust. This phenomenon, added to the reduction in humidity and the moving away of a trough, will cause grayish-toned skies and a notable decrease in cloudiness across much of the national territory.
Recommendations for high temperatures
The hot environment will remain persistent due to the increased incidence of solar radiation, boosted by warm winds coming from the east and southeast. Given this scenario, authorities have issued preventive recommendations to safeguard the population’s health, especially for the most vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and pregnant women:
- Stay hydrated by consuming enough water throughout the day.
- Wear light-colored, lightweight, and preferably loose-fitting clothing.
- Avoid direct exposure to sunlight during the critical hours of 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Remain in cool, ventilated, and shaded environments.
Only isolated showers are expected during the afternoon, concentrated mainly in specific areas of the Central Mountain Range and the border region.
Changes for Sunday and weather watch
Starting Sunday, a shift in atmospheric conditions is expected with the arrival of a tropical wave. This system will favor an increase in humidity, which will lead to downpours accompanied by thunderstorms in various provinces of the country.
In parallel, the agency is keeping two areas of tropical disturbance in the Atlantic under observation:
- A system located less than 1,000 kilometers east of the Lesser Antilles, with a 30% chance of cyclone development over the next seven days.
- A second area southwest of the Cape Verde Islands, which presents a 30% chance of formation within 48 hours and 50% within a week.
Detailed forecast for Greater Santo Domingo
For the National District and the municipalities of the Santo Domingo province, a landscape of grayish skies with radiant sun and scarce cloudiness is anticipated. Temperatures will remain high, with minimums ranging between 24 °C and 26 °C, while maximums will reach values between 32 °C and 34 °C.
